The Zulu Battlefields…….
Blog — By Gobby on October 9, 2012 8:06 pmThe Zulu battlefields provoked differing emotions from the historians and non-historians in the team. For me, it was a wonderful day, something that I had looked forward to enormously and I was not disappointed. The Isandlwana battlefield in particular is a truly awe inspiring place. We were very lucky to be taken there by a Zulu man called Mphiwa, who made the whole experience very memorable. His great grandfather and grandfather fought in both battles and he brought his own emotion to the storytelling, which made it very special. In addition, I was shocked to discover that two Dyers perished at Isandlwana, which was a big surprise.
- The British didn’t return to bury their dead until May, 4 months after the battle. All they found were bones. There were gathered up and covered in stone cairns.
- Looking down from the rock.
- 300 or so British soldiers tried to flee towards Fugitive Drift. The Zulus chased them down. You can see the trails of white cairns where they lie.
