Chilling Out on the Chobe!!

What could be more enjoyable than a river cruise?
Ice bucket cooling in the water, a plate of smoked salmon washed down by a glass or two of cold Chablis, followed by a quick dip?

Not on the Chobe river in Botswana. Some of the crocodiles that we saw were 4 metres long, always presenting that toothy grin as if to invite you…… “Come on in, the water’s lovely!”

Elephant of all sizes were everywhere, drinking from and washing in the river. Throwing the white sand of Elephant Beach onto their backs to keep cool and thereby appearing ghostly.

The biggest herd of buffalo that we have seen on our journey so far grazed on the river bank.

A pride of lions prowled along the other river bank looking for easy prey. They came upon a journey of giraffe and spooked them; their panic startled a herd of impala. Everything was kicking off and we thought that we were about to see our first kill……..!! It was not to be….the lions gave up chasing the giraffe, who disappeared at a gallop over the nearest hill, accompanied by the impala.

Until the rains arrive, the Chobe river will remain one of only a few sources of water for the grazers in the region. The predators can stay close, knowing that a regular supply of meat will be available along the river banks.

A great time for a river cruise…..!!
