Day Twelve – Black Rhino

Blog, Photos — By on October 3, 2012 8:08 pm

We had a once in a lifetime sighting today of one of the worlds most persecuted and endangered species in a wildlife National Park North of Port Elizabeth.

We had had 2 sightings of this rare creature late in the afternoon, but at distance or obscured by thick bush, when a fully grown male came thundering out of the bush straight at our open topped landcruiser. It stopped within 5 metres, shook its enormous head and then sped off into more thick bush.

I doubt any of us will ever forget that moment.

There are some amongst us however (Nick becoming ever closer to being a convert) who felt this extraordinary moment was in fact actually eclipsed by another remarkable sighting….the highly sought after twitchers dream, wait for it….the Chestnut Vented Tit Babbler. In fact Nick swears he saw a fine pair. We only have his word for this. I will leave it to you the reader to judge which was the more momentus occasion.

George left us today and returns next week.

Jim went to the dentist…nothing new there.

That’s it.
