Day Seventeen – Down into the Mist
Blog, Photos — By Buspass on October 8, 2012 8:24 pmBreakfast was an edgy affair as we contemplated the descent of the Sani Pass in the wet and the fog. It is treacherous enough in the dry.
It was not helped by the immediacy of the descent as it is on the doorstep of the lodge. So no time to warm up and get one’s eye in so to speak.
But we made it albeit grindingly slowly at times. With all brakes applied there were times the bikes would just not stop slithering downhill as the rocks were greasy and the mud like glass.
I had a couple of slides where the bike just went from under me but the team were around to help pick it up. Sam was particularly heroic as he made 2 descents.

A happy well fed local.
Having reached the base we then drove through fabulous countryside in the most dismal wet weather, very reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands.
We were rewarded by a splendid cafe in a little town called Nottingham Road in the middle of Natal.
The afternoon. saw us in Zululand with children everywhere and villages teaming with life.
We have now settled into a delightful camp called Fugitives Drift and look forward to an update on Michael Caines’ version of the Zulu wars tomorrow. J
