Day 6 – 25th November

Red Letter days come along occasionally and Sunday 25th November 2012 will be remembered as “Charlie’s Day”.

She was the first to spot everything that day from the very rare Roan Antelope to a pair of Honey Badgers to the very difficult to find Eagle Owl. She was on fire and our honey badger chase off track through the bush was one of the highlights of the Kings Pool safari.

Honey Badgers are rare and normally nocturnal, so to find a pair of them wandering happily through the bush in the middle of the day was very exciting. They are animals with real attitude…….lions avoid them like the plague and there are stories of buffalo dying, following encounters with honey badgers, who ripped off their private parts!

The Roan Antelope is a very rare and beautiful animal. Sadly, like its cousin the Sable Antelope, its magnificent horns are prized by hunters and poachers. Their numbers have sharply decreased and it is now endangered.

Happily, Botswana’s zero tolerance policy towards poachers (they shoot them!) is beginning to have an impact. Hunting will be banned in Botswana from 2013 onwards.

“Charlie’s Day” ended with our transfer to Vumbura Camp. Here, she rounded off her day by spotting a young 2 year old female Leopard on the way from the airstrip to the camp!
Our quest was at an end, we had finally seen a leopard. What a day!
