Day 46 – Campfire Music

Blog — By on November 6, 2012 2:53 pm

It is the end of the day and we are all sat in a semicircle around a campfire on the banks of the Zambezi, two buffalo grazing a hundred metres away and Nick singing Maggie May on his guitar.  There is a warm breeze blowing, there is ice in the gin and tonics and the sun has lit up the sky scarlet. After a hot day in the canoes (40 degrees plus), dodging hippos and worrying about monster crocs it doesn’t get much better than this!!

A couple of days ago we had adrenaline grass, today we had adrenaline channel. It was narrow, fast flowing and full of hippos and crocs. Not all the hippos took kindly to our progress crawling along hugging the bank and trying to squeeze past these enormous territorial animals. They are 4 times the size of a horse and have a mouth big enough to bite a canoe in half…which incidentally did occur a couple of years ago. But we managed and the gin and tonic tastes all the better for it!

And as a footnote I caught a very impressive tiger fish today…6 or 7 kgs and, we had a game of football on an island in the middle of the Zambezi.  Heyho.  J
