Hopefully the children will be in bed by the time you read this as what I am about to report is not for the little ones.

Setting off on our ride out of Hwange National Park at around 0800 on Tuesday morning you can imagine my horror when I was confronted by a large erect mamba (I know what you’re all thinking – but you’re wrong and you can all have a detention for being so rude).

There in all its glory was a silvery grey snake standing up on the tarmac with a look that suggested I might be wise to take avoiding action. For those of you who remember my close encounter with the Cape Cobra, it will come as no surprise to know that I was somewhat keen to avoid a re-occurrence of that heart stopping moment. Happily I can report that on this occasion the black mamba (steady!) simply remained at attention (with probably as much as two thirds of his body of the ground) as I rode past.
